316L austenitic stainless steel is a low carbon version of 316 . The low carbon helps improve weldability as compared to the 316 as well as improved corrosion resistance. The added Molybdenum in 316L gives this grade much better pitting resistance than the traditional 304L stainless. This alloy is one of the most widely used stainless steels showing up in just about every industry and is often used in seawater applications due to the pitting resistance.
Construction encasement, doors, windows and armatures, offshore modules, cisterns and pipes for chemical tankers, production, warehousing and overland transportation of chemicals, food and beverages, pharmacy, synthetic fibre, paper and textile plants and pressure vessels. Due to the low C-content, the resistance to intergranular corrosion is also guaranteed in the welded condition.
